I am new to hsmm-mesh. I followed the irc server installation instructions successfully until I got to the server configuration section. I've never done ssh before, so I just jumped in and tried to connect via a terminal window (Ubuntu 10,04 LTS) and ssh (ssh 172.27.0.1). I get a "Connection refused" error. After reading some of the OpenWRT docs, I tried putty, with the same results. I need some assistance with making a telnet or ssh connection to the hsmm router. I have the PC attached to one of the router's LAN ports. Thanks for any assistance with this aggravating problem. Regards, Dale. KG5LT

Hi Dale, download a program called "Putty", this will allow you to ssh into the router. Once you get it running, use your node name as a hostname and port 2222, after a brief security message you get to input your routers username/password and then you will see something like "openwrt" and then the command prompt, you can edit the config file with vi now...73 Tom |

Guess I will ask this here.....
I am planning on adding a secondary server to another node. How do I stop the server running on the first node so I can vi into the config file to make the needed changes? |

First off, thanks to ve3tsa and k5ktf for the hints using PuTTY and the 2222 port. That did the trick.
On to KC7NEC's request, if he hasn't already got an answer. Login to the primary node, having the irc server running, just like you did to set it up. Issue the command:
/etc/init.d/ngircd stop
It should respond with 'Terminated'. Now, you can vi the config file. Do a 'start' to reignite the server. BTW, most init.d scripts have several commands, like 'start' and 'stop'.

Thank you. I did get past that part of my issues. Next I am trying to figure out how to get two servers to connect to each other over the MESH. |

I tried putting the relevant section for connecting IRC servers together here but the formatting went all to hell. Here's a short URL for the latest version of the installation instructions for ngIRCd. The part you want is at the end. http://tinyurl.com/7tuenjx Let me know if you need more help! -Rusty- |

I the setup routine the same if I am using a Win7 machine? I saw the sheet from AE5AE, but could not find that file needed... or at least I thought I needed. I am totally new at this and it is overwhelming at times. I have 2 regular nodes flashed and working as well as 2 other people around town. We are going to try to get a chat program going on a 4mb unit that I have.
Thanks Bill R.

Bill, The setup instructions would be the same if you are using a Windows 7 machine because
the instructions are for interacting with the WRT54G router. I suspect that the
real challenge for you will be gain the knowledge necessary to interact with the Linux shell
and editor on the router itself in order to properly configure the server.
I wish I could deliver a web interface to do the configuration but, at this time,
that just isn't in the cards. I would suggest you find someone that's knowledgeable
about Linux to assist you. Good luck! -Rusty- |

Is there an updated link to these instructions, please?
The posted link no longer works.
Thanks David |

The link above is OLD and my ISP stopped providing webserver space.
The latest instructions are in the Applications section,
